Non-Science Majors Reducing Their Environmental Footprints: A Grassroots Challenge

火曜日, 1月 3rd, 2012

Professor Mark Bloom, Texas Christian University, USA Over the last three semesters, non-science major students have been challenged to create ways to reduce their environmental footprint on the planet and then adopt these practices. Students are encouraged to find creative solutions to reduce environmental degradation in ways that are simple to achieve, save time and/or money, and can be lasting changes that when adopted by many can result in less environmental impact by human activity. A total of 550 students at a small, private university have participated in this challenge and have presented a wide range of simple, money and time-saving, changes-of-practice that if adopted by their classmates can accomplish great reduction in energy use, garbage production, water use, and environmental degradation. This challenge has become a “grassroots” movement at the University to allow each student to realize that their small contribution to environmental welfare can have large global implications.
